Two words, murmured into a microphone, and everything on court changes rhythm. New balls, please. The ballkids break into a jog. A sealed tin hisses open somewhere behind the baseline. Six bright yellow spheres get rolled out, the server picks two, squeezes them, rejects one, squeezes another, and play resumes. If you are watching at home with a drink in your hand, the whole ritual takes about eleven seconds and you probably use it to check your phone.
Do not. That little ceremony is, right now, the centre of the loudest argument in professional tennis — an argument about wrists and elbows and shoulders, about whether the sport has been quietly grinding down the arms of the people who play it, and about whether a ball that costs a couple of pounds can end careers. As the National Bank Open works through its second week in Toronto and Montreal, and the tour points itself at New York, the ball is the thing players keep being asked about, and the thing they keep having opinions on.
Here is what that fuzzy yellow object actually is, why it dies so quickly, why the best players in the world are furious about it, and what tennis is finally doing in response.
The rule almost nobody knows
Start with the ritual itself, because the numbers are stranger than you would guess.
Under the sport's regulations, balls are changed for the first time after seven games, and then every nine games after that. Not nine from the start. Seven, then nine, forever.
The reason for that odd first number is beautifully practical: the warm-up. Players spend several minutes before the first point hitting with the match balls, so those balls arrive at 1-0 already slightly used. The extra two games of grace at the front simply account for the mileage the ball racked up before anyone was keeping score.
Once you know it, you cannot unsee it. Count the games in the first set of the next match you watch. At the changeover after the seventh game, the tin comes out. Then the ninth after that. The whole match runs to that metronome, and the players track it in a way you would find slightly unnerving — they know, at any moment, exactly how old the ball in their hand is and how many games it has left. It is a small tactical layer running underneath everything else, and it never appears on the scoreboard.
What a tennis ball has to be
The ball is one of the most tightly specified objects in sport. To be approved for professional play, it has to weigh between 56.0 and 59.4 grams and measure between 6.54 and 6.86 centimetres across. Those tolerances are tiny. The difference between the lightest legal ball and the heaviest is about the weight of a two-pence coin.
Then there is the bounce test, which is delightfully low-tech for a sport with electronic line calling. A ball is dropped from 100 inches onto concrete. It has to come back up between 53 and 58 inches. That is it. That is the standard the whole professional game rests on.
Balls also come in speed categories, and the naming is the sort of thing that makes newcomers throw their hands up. Type 1 is the fast ball — and it is designed for slow surfaces. Type 3 is the slow ball, designed for fast surfaces. Type 2 sits in the middle. The logic is compensation rather than description: you put a quicker ball on a sluggish court and a draggier ball on a skiddy one, aiming for something like a consistent experience for the viewer and the player. There are high-altitude balls too, made with lower internal pressure, because thin mountain air lets a normal ball fly like it has been fired from something.

The 50,000-mile ball
Now for the fact that tends to stop people mid-sentence.
The official Wimbledon ball, before it is ever struck, travels roughly 50,570 miles through 11 countries across four continents.
Clay comes from South Carolina. Silica from Greece. Magnesium carbonate from Japan. Zinc oxide from Thailand. Sulphur from South Korea. Rubber from Malaysia. All of it converges on a factory in Bataan, in the Philippines, where the rubber is vulcanised into the core. The wool, meanwhile, is shipped from New Zealand to Stroud in Gloucestershire, where it is woven into felt — and then flown back to the Philippines to be glued onto the cores. Petroleum naphthalene arrives from China. Glue from Basilan. The tins come from Indonesia. And then the finished, pressurised, packaged balls make one last journey of around 6,660 miles to a corner of south-west London so that someone can hit one into the net on a Tuesday.
That is not a scandal, exactly. It is what a globalised supply chain looks like when you follow a single small object all the way through it. But it does reframe the thing sitting on the baseline. The ball is not simple. It is the most travelled participant at any tournament.
Why balls die
A tennis ball has two enemies, and both of them win.
The first is fluff. Every strike, every skid across the court, drags the felt outwards. A new ball is smooth and tight and cuts through air. A nine-game-old ball is shaggy, and that fuzz creates drag: it flies slower, sits up higher, and takes more effort to hit through. Ball inspectors and ballkids are trained to look for exactly this. As one Wimbledon description of the job puts it, you are looking for a lack of fluff.
The second is pressure. Almost every professional ball is pressurised — there is compressed gas inside the rubber core, and that is what gives you the crisp, alive bounce. From the second the tin is opened, that gas begins escaping through the rubber. Slowly at first, then not so slowly under repeated impact. By the end of its nine games a match ball has measurably less bounce than it had at the start, and the players are the ones absorbing the difference.
Heat and humidity accelerate all of it. Warm air makes the gas inside expand, giving a livelier bounce; damp air soaks into the felt and makes the ball heavier and slower. Which is why Wimbledon keeps its balls in courtside refrigerators at a constant 20 degrees Celsius until the moment they are needed. The All England Club gets through around 54,250 balls in a fortnight — close to 2,000 a day — and every one of them is chilled before it goes out.
Wimbledon has used Slazenger balls since 1902, which makes it the longest-running partnership in the sport. The other three majors go their own way: Dunlop has supplied the Australian Open since 2019 and renewed through the end of the decade; Wilson supplies both Roland Garros and the US Open. Four majors, three brands, four distinct feels — and that is before you count the dozens of regular tour events in between.
The argument
Which brings us to the fight.
For several years now, a steady stream of the world's best players have said the same thing in different words: the ball changes too often between tournaments, and their arms are paying for it.
Novak Djokovic has been the most direct. "There is certainly a connection between frequent injuries of the wrist, elbow, and shoulder with ball changes," he has said, adding that he is "absolutely in favour of choosing one ball with which we will play all ATP tournaments." Daniil Medvedev — who once compared a particularly bloated batch to grapefruit — has spoken about worrying that he will have shoulder pain for the rest of his life. Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Stan Wawrinka and Sebastian Korda have all raised versions of the same complaint.
The mechanism they describe is not mysterious. As a ball loses pressure and gains fluff, you have to swing harder to produce the same speed and spin. Do that thousands of times a week and the load lands on the wrist, elbow, forearm and shoulder. Now change the brand next week so the ball is a fraction heavier or livelier, and the body has to recalibrate that load all over again. Repeat across an eleven-month season.
The circumstantial evidence has piled up. Carlos Alcaraz lost most of his 2026 to a wrist problem, missing both Roland Garros and Wimbledon — a lost summer we wrote about when the Wimbledon withdrawal was confirmed. Jack Draper has managed arm trouble through his rise. Taylor Fritz has dealt with forearm issues. None of that proves the ball did it — arm injuries in a sport built on repetitive one-armed acceleration have plenty of candidate causes, and modern racket and string technology asks more of the joints than the wooden era ever did. And not everyone in the locker room is convinced. Casper Ruud has said openly that he is tired of the ball being made into a drama every week. That dissent matters, because it is a reminder that this is a genuine dispute among professionals rather than a settled fact — some players believe the ball is wrecking arms, and others believe it has become the tour's favourite excuse.
What tennis is actually doing about it
The interesting development is that the governing body stopped treating this as noise.
Since 2023 the ATP has gathered feedback through more than 3,500 player surveys. In 2025 it did something structurally significant: it centralised the ball-supplier selection process, taking it away from individual tournaments choosing their own suppliers independently and coordinating it across the calendar instead. Swings that used to be a patchwork — the February indoor stretch in Europe, the outdoor events in the Americas and Middle East, the European spring clay run — were aligned onto common balls. In 2026 that alignment has been pushed further still, so that almost every swing on the calendar now runs on a consistent manufacturer.
That is a real answer to the loudest version of the complaint. If the problem is that the ball is different every week, then making it the same for six or eight weeks at a stretch removes a large part of the variable.
But it does not touch the second complaint: that within a single match, on hard courts, the ball degrades far too fast.
So this month tennis ran an experiment. At the Challenger event in Lexington from 3 to 9 August, the tour trialled a completely different ball-change schedule: the first change after five games, then every seven thereafter, instead of the standard seven and nine. Backed by the Player Advisory Council and prompted directly by player feedback about hard-court ball wear, the trial collected ball-tracking data through the week. Those findings are due to be reviewed when the council next meets, during the US Open.
It is a modest-sounding tweak with large implications. Shortening the cycle means fresher, livelier balls for more of every match, which means less of the heavy, laboured hitting players blame for their arms. It also means more balls consumed per match, more interruptions, and a subtly different sport: more free points on serve, shorter rallies, a faster and possibly less interesting spectacle. Nobody gets to have both.
Why this fortnight in particular
There is a reason the ball conversation always spikes in August.
The North American hard-court swing runs on the Wilson ball, and it has a reputation among players for being jumpy and hard to control. That is a specific complaint with a specific consequence: when the ball behaves unpredictably off the strings, serving accuracy dips and neutral rallies get scrappier, and the players punished hardest are the ones whose game is built on precision rather than raw power.
Add the conditions. August in Toronto, Montreal, Cincinnati and New York means heat and humidity, which is exactly the environment in which felt swells and balls slow down. Add the compression of the calendar, with players moving from a Masters event straight into another and then into a fifteen-day major. It is the moment in the season when the equipment is under the most stress and the bodies have the least recovery.
It is also the stretch of the year when the most withdrawals get announced. Correlation is not causation. But you can understand why the players keep pointing at the ball.

What to look for from the sofa
Now that you know the rhythm, the ball ritual becomes genuinely fun to watch.
Count to seven games and wait for the tin. Watch which player is serving when the fresh ones arrive — servers love new balls, and a big hitter who gets them at 4-4 in a tight set has just been handed a small gift. Watch the squeeze-and-reject routine: the server is feeling for a ball with tight, even felt and no soft spots, and the one they hand back to the ballkid has usually failed some test only they can detect.
Watch, too, in the last games before a change. The ball is at its heaviest and slowest, and some of the best long rallies in any match happen in game eight or nine of a cycle, when neither player can hit through the other because the equipment will not let them.
And listen. A fresh ball has a sharp, high pop off the strings. A dying one thuds. Once you can hear the difference, you will hear it constantly.
Where they all end up
One last thing, because it is the part of the story nobody televises.
Roughly a billion tennis balls are produced and discarded worldwide every year, and a pressurised rubber ball wrapped in glued wool felt is not a friendly object to dispose of.
Some tournaments handle it better than most. At Wimbledon, used match balls are sold to the public each day from a Wimbledon Foundation kiosk near Court 14, with proceeds going to the Foundation. Balls that are not sold get donated to clubs and schools that do not need championship-grade equipment, or recycled into cushioned matting for court surfaces.
And a few thousand of them go somewhere considerably more charming. In partnership with Wildlife Trusts in Avon, Glamorgan and Northumberland, Wimbledon balls have been sliced open and mounted on poles between 75 centimetres and a metre and a half off the ground, where they become nesting boxes for harvest mice — Britain's smallest rodent, small enough to live comfortably inside a ball that Novak Djokovic once served with.
It is a lovely image, and it also cannot possibly scale. A few thousand mouse houses against a billion discarded balls is a rounding error. The sport has not solved this one; it has just found a very photogenic corner of it.
The smallest thing on the court
There is something quietly absurd about all of this. Tennis has spent the last few years arguing about electronic line calling, tie-break formats, calendar length and prize money — and all the while the object at the centre of every single point has been the thing doing the most damage and getting the least attention.
That is finally shifting. The supplier calendar has been rebuilt. Ball-tracking data is being collected. A Challenger field in Kentucky spent the first week of August playing under rules nobody else uses, so that a committee meeting in New York can look at the numbers and decide whether the whole sport should follow.
So the next time an umpire leans into the microphone and says those two words, give it the eleven seconds. Somewhere in that hiss of an opening tin is a wool fibre from New Zealand, a decision made in a boardroom, and a real argument about how long the people you have come to watch will be able to keep playing.
